When we began six weeks ago, we were stepping into new territory. We knew that our kids needed books to read in Gaelic, and we had an idea that crowdfunding might be the quickest way to get our project off the ground and get our books out to them as soon as possible.
What we hadn’t anticipated was the way in which the crowdfunding process hasn’t just gathered the club’s subscribers – it’s built a community of supporters.
So for this blog we thought we’d ask them for their thoughts – here’s a selection.
Myself and my eldest son have been really excited about the new Gaelic book club, Cuilean Craicte.
I thought it was a great idea for both him and me. We'll be able to read the books together and learn and improve on our Gaelic together.
We have both been checking the fundraiser regularly as it crept up towards the 100% mark and were delighted when the target was reached.
Now we can look forward to the books dropping through our letterbox - one a month - from January.
For us, the important part, is that it's all good fun... funny books, getting a badge and a membership card, waiting for the postie to arrive, etc... Hopefully all that fun and involvement will encourage my son (and me) to read more Gaelic.
Cuilean Craicte came along at the perfect time for us, as our daughter has just turned seven and is probably ready to take the next step at reading. That said, even if she was not ready, we would still sign up, since we realise there will only one print run of each book. This is a unique opportunity where where experts in children's book publishing and Gaelic have created this project to produce Gaelic books, plus they are offering their skills for free. The costs are only for printing the books, but are still at a reasonable £8.33 per book. I do not think that I could justify denying my child this great opportunity.
Tha an tè bheag agam a' frithealadh Sgoil Ghàidhlig Ghlaschu agus tha caraid air club leabharaichean Cuilean Craicte a thoirt dhith airson na Nollaig. Tha mi fhèin agus i fhèin a' coimhead air adhart ri leabhar ùr fhaighinn a h-uile mìos agus tha mi an dòchas gum bi i a’ leughadh iad airson ùine mhòr fhathast.
I signed up for this project as my three children are in GM Education and other than school books they don't really have any other books available to them in Gaelic, although it is getting better. I want them to have access to entertaining books in Gaelic that might not be available otherwise.
Mìle mìle taing dhan a h-uile duine airson a h-uile taic agus cuideachaidh a thug sibh dhuinn - many many thanks to all of you for all the help and support. We can't wait to get cracking, and to start getting the books out to you all!
